More than enough for Tough Clough Stuff

Project Management

Memorable jobs are often those that have presented difficult hurdles. Pump Power was able to help Clough Engineering Ltd overcome such hurdles in its Gobe Oilfields project in Papua New Guinea.

Technical challenges

Based in Brisbane, Clough's north-east division won the contract for building 150 km of oil and gas pipelines in the PNG highlands. The lines ranged in length from 3 to 18 km. Once built, the pipelines had to be cleaned out and tested. Debris was removed by a disc called a 'pig' which was pushed along by a column of water at 1000 m/hr. Constant flow was required, plus the water had to be pumped over a vertical distance of up to 370 m! Two triplex plunger high pressure pumps, supplied by Pump Power Australia, were then used for hydrostatic testing.

Tight schedules and significant penalties

Dave Carter, Clough's Queensland/PNG plant manager, had a deadline to meet and had tried for a week to find the right company to design and supply the pump units. "When I rang Pump Power, they got back to me within half a day with budget, lead time, delivery date and confirmation. Their prices were good and their delivery meant we could meet the time-frame. There were very large penalties for over-running deadlines." The pumpsets were ordered in October and delivered in November. Parts were air-freighted from Germany to meet the delivery schedule.

Pump Power designed and built the complete package. The main high volume/high pressure skid used for filling the pipeline comprised of a RITZ 4915 x 7 stage pump coupled to a Caterpillar 3406C 330kW diesel running at a speed of 2000 RPM. The hydrostatic rig included two Interpump triplex pumps, 18.5 kW electric motors, clutches, hoses, filters & fittings.

The result

An integral part of a difficult project is completed on time, within budget and without fault. The pumps have performed well and truly to expectation, "with no complaints at all from the field, which is one of the measures of a job well done!" concludes Dave Carter.
